Blackburn Rovers Women fell to a controversial defeat in the Continental Tyres League Cup group stages as they lost 3-2 to Durham.
Rovers made a great start to the game with first-half goals from Helen Seed and Millie Chandarana but ended up on the wrong side of the five-goal thriller. Having lost 4-0 to Crystal Palace at the weekend, this was a much-improved performance from Simon Parker’s side.
Having fallen behind after 60 seconds, Rovers responded impressively with Seed netting her first goal for the first team from inside the box to level. Chandarana then put them ahead with a strike from the edge of the box.
But with 20 minutes to go, Durham got themselves level. Rovers conceded a controversial penalty when Faith Nokuthula was judged to have handled the ball.
The referee was again fron and centre in the dying minutes as they pointed to the spot for a second time, allowing Eleanor Ryan-Doyle to score the winner.
